The Opportunity 

We are searching for an experienced and detail-oriented Associate Director of Finance to join our team. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Associate Director will play a crucial role in overseeing finance and accounting functions at the Federation of American Scientists (FAS). In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of finance and accounting, the person in this role will be responsible for overseeing our organization's Fiscal Sponsorship Program.

What You’ll Do

Financial Oversight

  • Enforce and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.

  • Manage proposal budgeting process in collaboration with department heads.

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports.

  • Monitor cash flow, investment activities, and financial performance to identify areas for improvement and cost-saving opportunities.

 

Accounting Management

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger maintenance, and payroll processing.

  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions and adherence to accounting principles.

  • Coordinate annual audits and tax filings, liaising with external auditors and tax advisors as necessary.

  •  Implement systems and tools to streamline accounting processes and improve efficiency.

Fiscal Sponsorship Program Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for sponsored projects, providing guidance and support on contracting and financial matters.

  • Review and approve sponsorship agreements, budgets, and financial reports submitted by sponsored projects.

  • Monitor the financial performance of sponsored projects and ensure compliance with program guidelines and regulations.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to finance and accounting team members.

  • Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages professional growth and development.

  • Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, accountability, and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of the role.

Skills and Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred.

  • Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting roles, with at least 6 years of supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated experience working within a non-profit organization, with a deep understanding of the unique financial and operational challenges faced by mission-driven organizations.

  • Proven track record of effectively managing finances in a non-profit setting, including budgeting, grant management, and compliance with funding requirements.

  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting principles and regulations, including knowledge of FASB guidelines and IRS regulations governing tax-exempt organizations.

  •  Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  •  Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with stakeholders at all levels.

Work Environment 

This position will be a hybrid role, meaning that both remote and in-person work can be accommodated, generally two to three days per week on-site, and two to three days per week remote.

Salary Range

  • $120,000 - $135,000
