Public Sector Innovation and Design Training, Manager
The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) seeks to hire a full-time Manager to oversee and support the design and delivery of its new Government Innovation, Leadership and Design training program. As part of its efforts to diffuse effective governance grounded in the practice and methodologies of applied innovation, human-centered design, and customer experience, FAS launched a training and development program - “GILD” - aimed at civil servants with the goal of radically improving the design and delivery of services for the American people. The Manager will support all aspects of developing and delivering the training including executing on in-person workshops; building and deploying an asynchronous online training modules; and helping to build and execute on a vision to carry out and scale the training into the future.
Working closely with the Technology and Innovation team and FAS’s Designer-In-Residence, the Manager will be responsible for building, managing and executing innovation and design training programs aimed at public servants in federal,state, and local agencies. Specific responsibilities include:
Manage and lead the design and planning of experiential human-centered design workshops aimed at civil servants;
Help manage and build a team to execute on an existing scope to develop the training, and participate in crafting and executing a future vision for how the innovation and design training and work scales at FAS;
Facilitate and lead in-person experiential human centered design workshops for civil servants;
Help create and deploy a “train the trainer” model focused on teaching additional facilitators and future instructors in FAS’s innovation and design training;
Provide thought leadership and creative ideas that help establish FAS as a leader in the field for delivering innovation and design services to government partners such as drafting white papers, providing insights on policy proposals related to government transformation, and other potential products;
Performing other duties as needed and assigned related to the delivery of innovation and design programming at FAS.
Experience and Qualifications
FAS is seeking an entrepreneurial, ambitious, and resourceful individual who is comfortable in a dynamic and fast-moving environment and possesses exceptional attention to detail, communication abilities, and interpersonal skills.
Competitive candidates would have many of the following experiences and qualifications:
Direct experience working with or in federal, state or local governments as an employee, contractor, fellow or other arrangement;
Experience facilitating, leading and delivering in-person workshops for diverse audiences. Experience delivering workshops or training with or for government customers and civil servants a plus but not required;
Direct knowledge and experience applying related training methods including human-centered design, applied innovation, public sector innovation, user experience, customer experience, employee experience, service design, product design or another adjacent area;
Deep knowledge of the inner workings of federal, state or local governments and existing challenges in service and program delivery;
Experiences in delivering, building, or advising on government programming including social services, digital transformation, operational innovation or related areas of work a plus but not required;
Experience in strategic communications with an emphasis on storytelling and messaging for diverse audiences a plus but not required;
Candidates with experience in instructional design, classroom teaching, lesson planning, curriculum and program development, online learning, or related areas are strongly encouraged to apply.
FAS offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule but the preference for this role is that the Manager would be based in Washington, DC or the surrounding areas.
